Whenever you get behind the wheel of your vehicle, it’s imperative to avoid danger. While negligence is hardly ever predictable, there are some common signs that can indicate a driver is reckless. Make sure you are scanning the road and recognizing signs of negligence to stay clear of dangerous drivers.

Swerving Between Lanes

When a vehicle is swerving back and forth, it could mean a number of things. First, it could indicate that a driver is drunk, tired, or distracted. The swerving action could mean they’re not paying attention to the road and trying to stay in their own lane.

Second, swerving could indicate an aggressive driver who is attempting to weave in and out of traffic. These drivers don’t always give enough room to other vehicles and try to squeeze through narrow openings putting all other drivers at risk.

Erratic Braking or Slowing Down and Speeding Up

Drivers who are distracted, intoxicated, tired, or otherwise reckless often find themselves slowing down when they lose their focus on the road. They’ll then suddenly speed up once they realize how slow they’ve been going.

Similarly, a driver may brake upon realizing that they’ve been going too fast or if they suddenly notice a vehicle in front of them. Following too closely to a vehicle like this can be dangerous.

Speeding

When someone is traveling well above the posted speed limit, there can be many different reasons. Of course, the driver may just be reckless, but it can also indicate someone who is drunk or distracted. In any case, if you see a speeding vehicle approaching you, safely pull off to the side and allow them to pass, then be sure to report the vehicle.
